Tree Service Tips

TREE PRUNING AND TREE CARE FROM  PROFESSIONAL ARBORISTS
Tree service professionals generally agree that the best time to determine pruning needs is during the dormant season, particularly with deciduous tree varieties. The absence of leaves reveals tree structure, exposes limb problems, and provides easier access for pruning. Dead or diseased trees, on the other hand, are more easily identified during the summer, when healthy trees are vibrant with new leaf growth. We recommend immediate removal of potentially dangerous trees, but be sure to mark the unhealthy ones to be removed, or pruned, in the Fall. It’s also a good idea to tag Dogwoods and other trees that you don’t want to mistakenly take down. Find "Homeowner Approved" tree services in Charlotte here.

TREE CARE TIP - TREE PRUNING SERVES MANY IMPORTANT PURPOSES
In addition to basic shaping, a tree may need pruning for a variety of reasons: including removing diseased or damaged branches, thinning the crown to permit new growth and better air circulation, reducing the height of a tree, and removing obstructing lower branches. In the case of a tree with large branches, when removal of big branches is desired, it is probably best to hire experts. Large tree pruning, in particular, can require climbing and heavy saws or even cherry-pickers and chain saws. This is a job that should be left to trained and experienced professionals.

TIP - HIRE AN ARBORIST RATHER THAN A “TREE COMPANY”
Effective and environmentally conscientious tree work requires expert knowledge, and should be performed by an arborist. A Certified Arborist (or ‘CA’) is a professional who has over three years' experience and has passed a rigorous written test from the International Society of Arboriculture. The International Society of Arboriculture recommends the following tips for selecting an arborist: Beware of “door-knockers,” and never be rushed by bargains, nor pay in advance. Ask for certificates of insurance, including proof of liability for personal and property damage and worker’s compensation. Ask for local references and determine if the arborist is a member of any organizations like the American Forestry Association, American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA), International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), or Tree Care Industry Association(TCIA). Get multiple quotes; good arborists offer many services such as pruning, fertilizing, bracing, and pest control. Good arborists will also generally not recommend topping a tree. A conscientious arborist will not use climbing spikes if the tree is to remain in the landscape. Beware of an arborist who is eager to remove a living tree.

TREE SERVICE TIPS - THINGS TO LOOK FOR
Work with your tree service company to identify the full scope of the job. Point out dead branches that could fall and cause damage to your property. Identify leaning trees and look for broken ground near the base of the trees; both increase the odds of trees falling during a strong storm. Damaged or missing bark provides insects access, and may require tree or branch removal. Finally, insect infestation, mistletoe, and vines all cause damage to your trees, and should be managed with caution.
